Secondary Product Associate

Wages: Hourly, Commensurate with experience.

Overview:

  • The Frog Bench Farms (FBF) Secondary Product Associate (SPA) plays a key role in the production of products sold through FBF markets. These products are derived from FBF-grown ingredients.

  • The SPA will be responsible for creating product that will be in demand by the public, aiming to achieve a monthly sales goal of $2,000 with the products created through this initiative. Additionally, the role involves designing a comprehensive method for tracking all aspects of product production, managing secondary product inventory and waste, and exploring options for the secondary use of products.

  • The SPA will work closely with the Farm Manager and Assistant Farm Manager (AFM) to monitor inventory, reduce waste, and explore secondary product uses. Active participation in the implementation of Utah Department of Food and Agriculture (UDAF) standards across all farm activities is also required.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Public Pickup:

    • Immediate supervisor is Assistant Farm Manager.

    • Provide secondary product for public pickup to AFM every Wednesday.

    • Be available onsite to deliver public pickup orders to customers as they arrive on their schedules time – Wednesday 2:00-6:00 PM, Thursday and Friday 11:00-6:00 pm.

    • Contact customers if they are late or a “no show “for their pickup time.  Reschedule as needed and inform AFM.

    • Follow all UDAF methods and processes.

    • Approximately 15% of your work week.

  • Secondary Product Production:

    • Immediate supervisor is Farm Manager.

    • Food Handlers permit.

    • Working knowledge of kitchen appliances.

    • Current with UDAF and CDC required vaccines.

    • Mastering processes, recipes, packaging of current secondary products:

      • Harvesting, drying, dehydrating, freeze drying.

      • Tea blends, herb blends, cheong, vinegar, sugar cubes, wreaths and dried flowers.

      • Bottling, paper zip lock craft bags and boxed.

    • Inventory:

      • Reporting information to Assistant Farm Manager.

      • Tracking current items in bulk and packaged.

      • Weekly report AFM.

    • Documentation:

      • Weekly written update on all processes, adjustments and/or changes each week.

    • Ensure and maintain health, safety of kitchen, organized processing, equipment and storage space in a way that ensures quality standards, health and safety and meets UDAF processes.

    • Assist with additional projects and work-related errands as needed.

    • Approximately 70% of your work week.

  • Farm Support:

    • Immediate supervisor Farm Manager

    • Participate with Wednesday and Friday afternoon cleanup of kitchen.

    • Work on harvest and harvest planning for secondary products.

    • Approximately 15% of your work week.

  • Processes and products meet UDAF standards plus possible additional standards implemented by specific markets FBF will be entering.

  • Knowledge of Square, Google Document, Google Sheets, Word and Excel.

  • Design effective, efficient and accurate tracking systems for all products that include recipes, instructions, processes, measurements, equipment, date, timing, ingredients, quantity produced and history.

  • Maintain cleanliness by performing tasks such as mopping floors, cleaning windows, wiping down surfaces, and dusting high areas.

  • Support sustainable practices across all farm and greenhouse areas.

  • Demonstrate commitment to the sustainability and well-being of the project and its stakeholders through responsible stewardship of the land, plants, and environment.

  • Accepting responsibility and personal ownership for actions, results and risks.

Expectations & Processes:

  • Conversations, decisions that directly affect FBF business plan, business processes, public perception and terminology must be approved by owners.

  • Information per product to include but not limited to ingredients, amounts, process, equipment, batch, date, time needed to achieve a product ready for sale.  Each item will have its additional information.

  • At this time no new secondary products will be deeply researched or produced.  A list of possibilities will be maintained.  In February, planning, research and planting will begin for the coming year.

  • Typical week will be to evaluate products in process, documents any changes and post on Google program “sheets”, update inventory on Google “sheets”, package all products that are ready and provide to farm staff for filling orders for the various markets for the week.  Harvest and process new material at its prime with coordination from Farm Manager.

  • Market(s):  AFM determines number and types of secondary product needed on a weekly basis and will send an order to SPA.  SPA gathers requested secondary products and has them in the kitchen at requested time/day.

Applicant must have the ability to:

  • Follow directions and comply with all BMP (Best Management Practices) or ask further questions.

  • Be a proactive self-starter and work without close supervision.

  • Must have a current, valid driver’s license.

Typical Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • This position requires typical physical demands for farm labor, such as walking, standing, reaching, stooping, squatting, lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Work indoors and outdoors in cold, hot or wet conditions on uneven surfaces.

Health and Safety:

  • Ensure quality standards and health safety of all farm and greenhouse cultivation and harvesting practices, storage of chemicals, maintenance of farm

  • Accepting responsibility and personal ownership for actions, results and risks.

  • Keep accurate records of all matters relating to the operation of the greenhouse and farm.
